Why Protein?

I'm still a bit confused about why we need so much protein
I've basically taken it for granted and just try to take as much as possible
But I don't really understand it's importance

This morning I made an awesome protein shake
1 Cup lite milk
1 tbs peanut butter
2 tbs protein powder
Didn't realise it turned out to be a whopping 353 calories (34.8gms protein)
Is this too much?

I'm so confused!

Protein is good for us because it helps us keep our muscle mass as we loss weight. The shake sounds great, and the calorie count sounds okay, if it keeps you full for a while.

Dito. If that was a meal then I think the calories are okay. I generally try to keep in the range of 10 calories per gram of protein.

Also, protein is important because it tends to keep you full longer than equal quantities of other foods.
